California Labor unions' unprecedented battle against Governor Schwarzenegger's special election propositions ended Tuesday with a decisive victory, as California voters rejected all of the governor-supported initiatives on the ballot.
Unions across the state undertook a massive voter education and mobilization effort after the governor and his allies placed a series of initiatives on the ballot aimed squarely at consolidating power in the hands of the governor and corporate special interests.
The governor's initiatives were all defeated by solid margins, underscoring the effectiveness of the labor movement's campaign. The defeat of Proposition 75, in particular, has many unions celebrating. The initiative would have restricted public employee unions' ability to participate in politics, paving the way for corporations to pursue their anti-worker agendas unchallenged.
Also defeated were Proposition 74, which would have penalized teachers by extending their probationary period from two to five years; Proposition 76, which would have given the governor broad new powers to control the state budget; and Proposition 77, which would have given legislative redistricting power to a panel of three retired judges.
Unions were also instrumental in the defeat of Proposition 78, a deceptive prescription drug discount initiative sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry.
Winning Directions wishes to extend its sincerest congratulations to its clients who worked so hard to make this victory happen: Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs, California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations, California Teachers Association, San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs' Association, San Francisco Labor Council, San Mateo County Central Labor Council, United Food and Commercial Workers, and UFCW Local 101.
In other election news, Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine defeated opponent Jerry Kilgore to become the next governor of Virginia. Congratulations to Governor-elect Kaine and the Democratic Party of Virginia on their hard-fought win.
